A patio is usually the better call when:
- The area near the house is relatively flat or can be graded level
- You want a seamless transition from the yard to the living space
- You want built-in features like a fire pit, outdoor kitchen, or seat walls
- You want the lowest long-term maintenance and a surface that will not rot
