Our clay soil moves. Most of East Tennessee sits on red clay that swells when it's wet and shrinks when it dries. Repeat that cycle for a few years and anything sitting on a shallow base gets pushed around.
Freeze-thaw lifts everything. Water in the ground freezes, expands, and thaws over and over through a Tennessee winter. A patio on a thin or poorly compacted base rides that movement, and by spring you've got dips and lifted sections.
